Why should you own your domain name?

I've been working in the internet industry for almost 15 years and have been designing website for individuals, small business and corporations. I have come across many people and companies that face a lot of trouble when it comes to their Domain Name renewals, expiration, transfers, website re-design, or hosting changes etc.

In many situation people choose individuals or small design firm to design a website for them. To make things easier, they allow the web designer or the small design firm to register their domain name for them. Not knowing that having a different Owner name on the domain is just like having someone else’s name you’re your car title.

When they need to renew the domain name or make some changes to the website, they find out that the domain name is not registered in their name or their company's name at all but instead in the name of the web design company or the designer they hired to setup the domain and website for them. To make things worse in some cases those companies have gone out of business or the designer have moved to other side of the country and you just have no way to getting in touch with them to get your domain name back from them.

In some worse cases the domain expires because you don’t have the ownership and you can’t renew it. After about three months the domain becomes available for registration again and some domain buy agent or some other individual registers it before you even get a chance to get it back only to find out that the domain name is not going to your website at all instead it has your competitors website on it. Or someone else bought the domain and is now asking for thousands of dollars to sell that domain name. There is no way you’re getting the domain back with someone else listed as the owner of the domain name, hiring an attorney to claim the domain back is a very expensive and a time consuming matter and there still no guarantee that you’ll get you domain name back.

Well I think you get the point, although it is very easy for a web designer to acquire the domain name for you, it’s very important to know who is listed as the owner of your domain name.
